Solid Modelling

Solid modelling is a graphical mapping technique for virtual objects, which don't just look solid, but are solid. Solid modelling systems ensure that all surfaces meet properly and that the object is geometrically correct. Collision detection on the interiors of such objects as well as the skins is routine, and the full innards of the object are fully replicated.

Solid models can be cut open, or broken into independent parts, and basically treated like physical objects.

Simulating the Connection Between Fluid Droplets and a Solid Surface
German researchers develop a simulation that approaches fluid dynamics from a new angle. Considering the makeup of the solid structures the droplets hit, as every bit as important as the physics of the droplet itself.

Not a platform or modelling software specific book, Modelling Digital Dinosaurs is Ken?s first book, and it takes you through the basics of creating 3D representations of something which has fascinated and captivated for centuries ? dinosaurs. The book does this in a patient, kind, step by step manner, demonstrating techniques which really aid the beginning to intermediate modeller. Contains a free copy of Amapi version 1.5 on the CD in case the reader does not have a 3D modeller.

Rapid interactive scene modelling from video
A new modelling system, VideoTrace; the result of a collaboration between The Australian Centre for Visual Technologies at the University of Adelaide, and The Oxford Brookes Computer Vision Group, is capable of taking the output of any handheld digital camcorder, and turn it into a 3D model.

Modelling the Songbird's Vocalization Apparatus
Researchers at the University of Southern Denmark are tackling the virtual voice problem from the other end. They are attempting to understand how the zebra finch makes the noises it does, and accomplishes its range of sounds, by capturing the existing organs in its throat, modelling them in 3D, converting to a virtual environment and attempting to animate the model to produce the same sounds via fluid dynamics.
